How The Scholarship Program came about
Many years ago Carolina Telephone (now Sprint) began offering college scholarships for family members of active duty military personnel at the bases in the areas they served in the Carolinas. Our Chapter managed the program for Sprint and MCAS Cherry Point by screening the applications, selecting the recipients and arranging for a luncheon at the Officer’s Club for Sprint to award the scholarships. Sprint discontinued this program a few years ago.
Concurrent with the Sprint program, the Chapter began its own scholarship program which was funded by members donations in the late 1980’s. Sprint scholarship recipients were family members of active duty military members stationed at MCAS Cherry Point. TROA (later MOAA) scholars could be family members of either active duty or retired military members residing in our Chapter’s five county catchment area.
As far back as anyone can remember, the Chapter has awarded five $1,000 scholarships from member donations to family members of active and retired military personnel who are graduating seniors or students already attending college. Many recipients have been repeat winners. In 2013, the Chapter began a Scholarship Raffle program to help raise funds for our scholarship program.
Our scholarship recipients have attended a broad range of colleges and universities including East Carolina University, UNC-Wilmington, UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State University, Appalachian State University, Wake Forest University, Indiana University, St. Andrews University, Davidson College, UNC-Charlotte, UNC –Greensboro, Campbell University and Elon University.
